Seven Days in Seven Dials; Covent Gardens Hidden Village

A special exhibition is being held to showcase a week in the life of Seven Dials, the ‘hidden village’ in Covent Garden that is one of London’s leading creative and cultural hubs, reports BBC News.

The temporary exhibition, Seven Days in Seven Dials; a week in the life of London’s Culture Quarters, will encompass photography, video and audio tour podcasts that will explore the cultural and artistic histories of the area.

The project is an initiative between the Culture Quarter Programme and artistsandmakers.com.

The exhibition is open to the public from Saturday, 5 July to Friday, 23 July, 10am-7pm at 18 Shorts Gardens, Seven Dials, London WC2H 9BE.

West End Tourism Buoys Shaftesbury Plc

Shaftesbury Plc, the largest landlord in central London and the West End reported its first profit in more than two years after the value of its properties appreciated.

Values started to recover a year ago after a drop in the pound and a two-year slide in prices buoyed investment demand. Shaftesbury’s owns over 450 properties in Carnaby, Covent Garden, Chinatown, Berwick Street and Charlotte Street.

The West End Property Company earned 122.7 British pounds ($176 million) in the six months ended March 31, after losing £159.9 million in the prior-year period.

“Although the outlook for the UK and European economies remains uncertain, London’s West End is prospering,” Shaftesbury Chairman John Manser said.

West End Jongleurs Opens In Covent Garden

Jongleurs chain of comedy clubs are set to launch a brand new club in London’s West End on May 15th.Jongleurs Sway, in Covent Garden, is set to be the new flagship venue for the chain, which will offer shows on Friday and Saturday nights.

The opening event is set to be compéred by Capital Radio’s Greg Burns, with appearances by Dwayne Perkins, Mike Gunn and Will E Robo.Founder Maria Kempinska said: ‘We are incredibly excited to be bringing Jongleurs into the heart of London’s West End.

“Sway is a fantastic venue and has given us the perfect location to launch our new offering Jongleurs Posh. We are always looking for ways to give our customers the complete comedy and entertainment experience and feel that the scene has been crying out for a venue that offers that little bit more.’

Covent Garden Travelodge Planning Permission

Travelodge has received planning permission for a 249-room extension to its Covent Garden hotel in Drury Lane.

When the work is completed in January 2011 the hotel will comprise 457 rooms, making it the largest hotel in Travelodge’s 380 strong portfolio.

Paul Harvey, managing director for development at Travelodge, said: “Our existing hotel on Drury Lane has been trading extremely well and… there is enormous potential for growth in the budget hotel sector across London and with the 2012 Olympics just around the corner we will be driving forward a growth programme to enhance the capital’s reputation as an affordable visitor destination.”

By the 2012 Olympics, Travelodge will be the biggest hotel brand in London. It currently has 32 hotels in London and has seven more under construction.

Earlier this week Travelodge announced its intention to develop future hotels with pub operator Marstons.
